Former teacher charged over sexual assault in 1990s

A FORMER teacher from Woodburn has been charged over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl between 1995 and 1997.

Officers from Richmond Local Area Command launched an investigation in August 2014 regarding the alleged sexual assault of a then 15-year-old girl at a local school.

Investigators established Strike Force Urumbilum as inquiries continued and yesterday executed a search warrant at a Woodburn premises.

A number of items were seized from the home that will now undergo forensic examination.

A 55-year-old man was arrested at the property and taken to Ballina Police Station where he was later charged with aggravated sexual assault and three counts of carnal knowledge by teacher.

He was released on conditional bail and is due to appear before Ballina Local Court today.
