Taser threat ends drug, alcohol-fuelled siege

A MAN has been escorted to the Toowoomba Mental Health ward after a drug and alcohol-fuelled stand-off with police.

During the two-hour confrontation in Stanthorpe, the 45-year-old threatened self harm and attempted to goad police into shooting him.

Stanthorpe Police Acting Snr Sgt Shane Gleeson said police resolved the matter when the offender escalated matters by running down High St towards more populated areas while still armed.

"The presentation of a Taser was sufficient to convince the offender to discard his weapon and surrender to police," he said.

"Once assessment has been completed by the Mental Health Unit the offender can expect criminal proceedings to be commenced.

"In such situations, police will not jeopardise the safety of members of the public, or indeed their own safety, to resolve such matters but will do all in their power to reach a successful conclusion preferably with minimum harm to all concerned."

Sgt Gleeson said the officers performed professionally and in a restrained manner.
