Tarantula missing after break-in at Queensland Zoo

MISSING: one tarantula. Goes by the name of Missy. Aged 15. Reward offered.

The owner of the new Queensland Zoo at the Big Pineapple is reeling over the theft of her beloved Australian tarantula, commonly known as the Queensland Bird Eating Spider.

Missy was stolen on Monday night during a break and enter at the zoo office.

The roller doors were broken and thieves pushed their way inside.

Zoo owner Julie Seabrook has had Missy for 15 years and has offered a reward for its return.

The spider and a basket of charity wristbands were the only items believed to be stolen. The office also contained photographic equipment, hard drive, walkie talkies and more.

"I've had Missy since she was a baby, she just wouldn't know what to do if she was let go. She has always been looked after and fed by us," Ms Seabrook said.

"It's just senseless and a crazy thing to steal.

"I know Missy is a spider, but she is just as important as any other animal. It's so upsetting to think what could have happened to her.''

Queensland Bird Eating Spiders do not normally respond well to being handled and can inflict a nasty bite.

But Missy has always been fed by humans and is on a strict diet which includes crickets and worms.

An Australian tarantula bite can cause hours of vomiting and nausea.

Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
