It takes grunt to be a strong man

GAVIN Noy stepped up to the 95kg bar.

Staring at the “log,” he exhaled, grasped the handles and let out a gravely grunt as he thrust the object into the air.

Steadying the weight on his thick legs, his face a bright shade of red, Mr Noy held the position long enough for the clean and press to count before guiding the log to the ground with a thud.

The Glasshouse Mountains Strongman Challenge champion then proceeded to do this nine more times to secure his lead in the five-event competition.

The 118kg Sydney-sider also dead lifted 220kgs nine times, heaved 130kg atlas stones over a 1.4 metre bar five times and carried 110kgs in each hand over a distance of 40 metres.

It is little wonder that after four hours of body-punishing challenges, Mr Noy was looking forward to a beer before boarding a plane home last night.

Sjoerd van den Berg beat four under 105kg competitors to take out the lightweight title while Mr Noy claimed the opens honours over seven competitors, some weighing as much as 150kg.

Jarrad Gaudern, the only Sunshine Coast competitor, said his first strongman experience had been an eye-opener.

The Beerwah resident completed four of the five events after the Farmer’s Walk left him with a torn callus on his left hand.

Yesterday’s event, which was held at Fitness Plus Health Centre in Beerwah, was the first organised by Beerwah strongman Tim O’Shea and wife Jody.
