Swiss through to next round of Euros

FOOTBALL: Switzerland has joined neighbour France in making it through to the last 16 of Euro 2016 after a 0-0 draw in Group A.

The French had the better chances to score but Paul Pogba struck the post twice and Dimitri Payet fired a superb volley against the crossbar from Moussa Sissoko’s cross.

The Swiss could have been given a penalty when Bacary Sagna pulled Blerim Dzemaili’s shirt in injury time.

France won the group and will now face the third-placed team from either Group C, D or E, with Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland potential opponents, in Lyon on Sunday.

Switzerland are set to face the second-placed team from Group C, which could be Poland, Germany or Northern Ireland, at St Etienne on Saturday.

Meanwhile, FC Zurich’s Armando Sadiku scored the only goal of the game for Albania against Romania, but the Albanians will have to wait until Wednesday to see if they qualify for the knockout rounds as one of the four best third-placed teams after the group stages.
