MOTORSPORT: Shane van Gisbergen set the fastest time of the day in the opening practice rounds of the Gold Coast 600.

The Kiwi pipped Volvo drivers Scott McLaughlin and James Moffat.

Chaz Mostert was fourth in the first of the Fords ahead of Jamie Whincup, putting a controversial Bathurst 1000 behind him to end opening day with the fifth fastest time.

David Reynolds, Scott Pye, Michael Caruso, Bathurst winner Will Davison and Nick Percat rounded out the top 10.

McLaughlin showed he's overcome his Bathurst 1000 setback when he posted the fastest time in the opening practice round.

His Bathurst hopes ended with 11 laps left after controversial contact with Whincup and then Holden's Garth Tander.

McLaughlin was later penalised 25 competition points over the crash to fall to fifth in the drivers' championship with three rounds left.

He clocked 1 minute 11.32 seconds in practice round one yesterday.

Van Gisbergen's time in the third round was 1:10.421, after finishing second in the opener.

In the second session, only for co-drivers, Tony D'Alberto led the way with a 1:11.7753 lap, leading Paul Dumbrell by 0.249sec.
