'My family has been attacked by a guy with an axe'

A BIZARRE phone call of the moments a young man phoned emergency services for help has emerged in the wake of the axe murders of three former Buderim residents.

Former Melbourne student Henri van Breda, 20, came across as calm, emotionless and patient as he made a devastating emergency services phone call to help his family as they lay dying in their South African home.

Three of the van Breda family, formerly of Buderim, were found dead inside their luxury home near Cape Town, hacked to death with an axe.

Daughter Marli, 16  suffered critical injuries including an axe wound to her head.

The former Matthew Flinders Anglican College student lay bleeding from the throat, left to die. Her father Martin, mother Teresa and brother Rudi all died in the apparent axe attack.

Henri made the call early on January 27, stating a "guy with an axe" attacked his family.

Just after he says this, a noise which sounds like a giggle is audible.

The five-minute emergency call to paramedics has been leaked to South African media.

Henri appears calm yet frustrated while trying to explain his precise address to the operator in the phone call published by eNews Channel Africa.

" What sort of injuries is there?" asks the female operator, according to the transcript, which was released on Saturday.   "M ... M . My family and me were attacked by...a guy with an axe," Henri states.

"With an axe? Unconscious, eh?" asks the operator.

"Yes. And bleeding from the head," he replies.

Henri, now living with an uncle escaped with only minor injuries.

The deaths continue to baffle South African police who are yet to make any arrests.
