Stowaway found in ship docked in Gladstone Harbour

A STOWAWAY has been found on a ship that docked in Gladstone Harbour on Thursday night.

The Department for Immigration on Friday confirmed a stowaway had been found on a ship, but would not provide details.

An anonymous caller told The Observer the stowaway was a 14-year-old boy from Ethiopia. The caller said the boy was on board the BBC Austria. Those details are unconfirmed.

A Department for Immigration spokesman said the stowaway's circumstances were still being clarified.

"The department can confirm there was a stowaway who arrived on a vessel in Gladstone overnight," he said.

"The individual will be held in an alternative place of detention while the reasons for travel are being assessed."

Immigration officials travelled up from Brisbane to attend to the stowaway.

The Observer understands he was found on board before the ship came in to dock.
