Surge puts Bryce on front foot

A superb run leg saw Queenslander Bryce McMaster power home in Saturday’s 15th and biggest Byron Bay Triathlon.

McMaster followed North Coast athlete Clayton Fettell out of the surf at the end of the swim leg and was also behind after the bike leg to Lennox Head and back.

But on the second lap of the 10km run, McMaster surged past Fettell and eventually powered home to win.

Fettell finally finished in third spot after being claimed by Adam Holborrow.

The women’s professional event was won by Lisa Marangon, who took the lead on the bike run to hold off Michelle Wu, with Courtney Dutton, first out of the water, in third place.

Saturday’s event attracted more than 1000 competitors and a huge crowd with new street closures put into place for the first time.
