Surfing mothers catching a break
BEFORE she had children, Danya Hodgetts would regularly hit the beach to soak up the sun, sand and surf.
She's now a mum of three, including young twin boys, but still finds the time to get to the beach thanks to Surfing Mums, a group that brings together mums and dads who love the beach, surfing and socialising.
Ms Hodgetts said it was often hard for mums to find time for themselves and to keep doing the things they loved before they started their family.
That is why she is loving the chance to "find my surfing legs again" through the Byron Bay mums' group.
There's also a group based at Evans Head, and co-ordinator Roxanne Novak said it was an important outlet for local mothers.
"It's great to be able to meet regularly, let the kids have a play on the beach and for the mums to have a surf," she said.
"Surfing Mums is a way to combine meeting new people, a fun activity for the kids and some 'mum time' - it gives you the perfect guilt-free opportunity to go surfing."
Surfing Mums meet Tuesdays 9.30am in front of the surf club at Evans Head.
The Byron Bay group meets every Friday at 9.30am at The Pass.
