Surfers set for huge swell

MASSIVE surf is expected to hit our coast this weekend in what weather forecasters say could be the largest southerly swell in two years.

Waves eight- to 12-foot are tipped to crash offshore on Saturday bringing highly dangerous surf conditions to local beaches.

Already, talk of the monstrous east coast swell event has the region's bravest surfers prepping the jet skis.

“If the forecasts hold true, this could be the biggest surf of the year and the largest swell to hit the coast since September 2008,” former ASP World tour surfer Trent Munro said yesterday.

He's just returned home to Nambucca from Bali and has been eagerly tracking the swell across the Pacific.

“I'm pleased to see it is still holding course and should hit the east coast by Friday afternoon,” he said.

“In saying that though, if it shifts say one or two degrees, it could miss the coast altogether and send it out to sea.

“This sort of southerly swell event is long overdue, we've had a lot of sand ripped off our beaches and a southerly swell of this size should help return sand back to the banks on our beaches and points.”

Surf websites Swellnet and Coastalwatch are predicting the very large and powerful southerly swell will build from eight-foot late on Friday to dangerous heights on Saturday.

Light to moderate south-easterly winds are forecast, presenting ideal conditions for only the most experienced big wave board riders.

“Lets hope all the predictions hold true, but as any surfer knows you wake up to the conditions on the day – a lot can happen between now and then,” Trent said.

Trent Munro and Lee Winkler's North Coast Surf Development Day for the junior hi-performance at Park Beach on Saturday has been postponed to October 16.
