Ben rides a wave of creativity
BEN Dalton has found the perfect way to combine his pleasures of surfing and painting - he paints his surfboards.
The Mooloolaba artist was enjoying a surf a couple of years ago when he looked at his surfboard and discovered "the perfect canvas".
He began painting various beach scenes, first for himself, then for a friend who was getting married.
"It was of Alexandra Headland," Mr Dalton said.
"I paint beach locations, waves and beach scenes."
Mr Dalton's catchy boards caught the eye of Mooloolaba's Envy Cafe and he will hold a month-long solo exhibition there from Friday.
"I've been painting surfboards for the last two years, but I've only really just started to look at selling them," he said.
Mr Dalton, a landscaper with Moreton Shire Council, will exhibit seven of his surfboards and five canvasses.
He has decided to donate one of his boards to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a non-profit marine conservation organisation.
He said its estimated value was about $1000. "I thought they would be a good charity," he said.
