Super Cool cops tough Cup impost

RACING: The Mark Kavanagh-trained Super Cool has retained favouritism for next month's $2.5 million Caulfield Cup despite being allocated 55kg.

Weights were issued Wednesday for the Cup, the world's richest 2400m handicap, with 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon allotted topweight of 58kg.

That was the same weight Dunaden carried to victory last year after winning the 2011 Melbourne Cup.

Just four horses have carried more than 54.5kg to victory in the Caulfield Cup in the past 20 years, but handicapper Greg Carpenter says Super Cool - the present favourite at $9 with Tattsbet - has earned his weight after winning this year's Australian Cup.

"Super Cool was the first three-year-old since Saintly to win the Australian Cup and is one of only three to do so," Carpenter said.

Saintly was allotted 55.5kg in the Caulfield Cup as a four-year-old, but did not run, instead winning the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

Equal second topweights with 57kg are imported galloper Sea Moon, who beat a very unlucky Dunaden in last year's Hardwicke Stakes (2400m) at Royal Ascot, and Red Cadeaux, who ran third in the same race and was runner-up in the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
