From the time she was nine years old, Tammy Humphreys spent her Sunday mornings on the beach at Alexandra Headland.

For as long as she can remember, her family has spent six weeks every year camping at the exact same site at Cotton Tree Caravan Park.

While she was growing up, the 27-year-old even worked at Cotton Tree swimming pool.

Bundaberg might claim her as one of its own these days, but the 2009 Summer Surf Girl is also a born and bred Sunshine Coast girl.

Tammy beat 15 young women from around the state to take out the coveted title at a gala ball at Conrad Jupiters, on the Gold Coast on Saturday night.

The beach girl, who has worked as a teacher in Bundaberg for the last seven years, said she considered both Bundaberg and the Sunshine Coast to be her home.

Tammy was a member of Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club from age nine to 21, and her dad and four siblings were also members of the club.

“I wouldn’t have won without the Bundaberg surf club, but I wouldn’t have won without the Alexandra Headland surf club giving me my base and foundation,” she said on Sunday.

Tammy will be a face of Surf Life Saving Queensland for the next year and will represent the movement at various events around the state.

She said working as a full-time teacher while fulfilling her Summer Surf Girl commitments would be a test of her time management skills, but would also be a challenge she would enjoy.

SLSQ services manager George Hill said Tammy was a standout during the entire judging process.

“She is also very passionate about her role as Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl, the surf life saving movement as a whole, and her job as a teacher,” he said.

“We’re confident she will approach her year as an SLSQ ambassador with great energy.”
