Stylish Savva wows with his Greek lamb kebabs
BRISBANE fashion designer Savva Argyrou has gone from stitching up dresses to whipping up delicious Greek fare.
The 43-year-old won tonight's "main meal" themed episode of Channel 10's food marketing show Recipe to Riches.
Savva appeared on the fourth season of Project Runway Australia, but said he wants a career change.
"Food and fashion are both my passions," he said.
"With Runway it was about mass production. This (Recipe to Riches) is mass production but you can be creative. You have to be creative because people want something that they haven't seen before."
His winning lamb pita kebab is based on his grandmother's lamb meatball recipe.
"Greeks have this thing about not just cooking for the people you're with; you overcook. I had some leftover mince and I didn't want to have meatballs again the next night. I had some pita bread in the cupboard, so I smeared it on there and we froze it.
"A week later I pulled them out, put them on the frying pan and cooked them and I was like 'Oh my God this is like a kebab you get at the shop'."
One of the show's experts, Carolyn Creswell, reckons Sav's Kebabs are tasty enough win the show's $100,000 grand prize.
But to do so they must fly off Woolworth's shelves this week.
He hopes time-poor families will embrace his kebabs as a healthy alternative to fast food.
"Sometimes we work back late and we don't have time to cook something fresh and nutritious," he said.
"For us it was like 'this works'. You're eating it within five minutes of making it. I think a lot of people can relate to that."
Savva and his wife are using part of his $10,000 winnings from tonight's episode to go on a holiday to Greece.
"We've been married 17 years and our last holiday overseas was on our honeymoon," he said.
"My wife hasn't see the Greek islands. I can't wait for her to have the traditional Greek gyros, which we call kebabs here in Australia."
