Stoinis to be given every opportunity to prove fitness

AUSTRALIAN all-rounder Marcus Stoinis will fly to Brisbane later this week for further work on his injured shoulder before a decision is made on his fitness for the Champions Trophy.

Stoinis is resting in Perth after landing awkwardly on his shoulder while training with his Indian Premier League side Kings XI Punjab and will be given "every opportunity" to prove his fitness.

Only four members of the Australian Champions Trophy squad, which starts on June 1 in the UK, are in Australia and they will gather for a pre-event camp in Brisbane.

Speedsters Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood, along with wicketkeeper Matt Wade will be joined by Stoinis, who will be monitored closely by Cricket Australia medical staff.

If fit, Stoinis will fly out with his teammates late next week to the UK where they will link up with players coming from the IPL, or playing county cricket.

Out of favour all-rounder James Faulkner, who missed the 15-man Champions Trophy squad and also lost his CA contract, could be one player called on should Stoinis not make the trip.

But Test batsmen Peter Handscomb, coming off a stellar 140 for county team Yorkshire in a limited overs game, looms as a potential inclusion given he is already in the UK.

Australia will play a warm-up game on May 26 and should have all players available, with squad members to leave India as soon their IPL team is eliminated from the competition.

The final pool games are at the end of this week with the final on May 21.

Steve Smith and David Warner, who captain Pune and Hyderabad in the IPL, headline the list of squad members in the mix for the playoffs.
