Start of champion mare's streak to be immortalised

AN ODE to a champion whose world-famous journey began on local turf will become an annual fixture from mid-next year.

The Sunshine Coast Turf Club announced its Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas would now be known as the 'Winx Guineas'. The race is run as part of the Caloundra Cup Day, in June each year.

The champion mare's first win in its 33-straight winning sequence was at Corbould Park. Prizemoney for the race will also be boosted from $140,000 to $175,000.

It was understood the turf club was also eager to work towards an upgrade in black-type status for the race, which has also produced the likes of Tivaci, Crack Me Up and The Bostonian.

Sunshine Coast Turf Club CEO John Miller said the Winx Guineas enabled the club to formally recognise the champion's connection to the region.

"We are privileged to have the support of Winx's owners to change the race name and have a permanent Queensland race name in her honour," Mr Miller said.
