Star athletes launch into Coast carnival

ATHLETICS: The University of the Sunshine Coast will play host to a showcase of world-class athletic ability when a bulk of national stars compete in the Sunshine Coast Annual Winter Carnival tomorrow.

With the IAAF Beijing World Championships beckoning many of Australia's top competitors will be using the event as a stepping stone to build some last minute form.

From the dancing hurdler Michelle Jenneke to 19-year-old high jumping sensation Eleanor Patterson there will be enough talent going around for every athletics enthusiast.

The discus will be one of the most hotly-contested events of the day with Australian champion Julian Wruck going head-to-head with his protégé and under-20 Australian record holder Matt Denny.

Event spokesmen Bryce Phillips said they had to extend the field just for the arrival of Wruck, who has a giant personal best of 68m.

Historically, Wruck's luck in major events has been nothing short of dreadful. He was diagnosed with glandular fever prior to the 2012 Olympics and had a season-worst throw at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"I've had pretty awful prep in the past," he said.

"Before the Commonwealth Games I lost weight to speed up, but lost too much strength and came ninth.

"My season average would have won it."

Wruck has a current world ranking in the mid 20s, but believes that doesn't reflect his true ability.

"Who knows though, it depends on who throws well on the day."

Wruck said his younger colleague Denny will provide good competition tomorrow, but it was more about rehearsing for the main event in a month's time. The first event starts at 8.30am at the USC's tartan track tomorrow with the men and women's 3000m.
