A BALLINA Country Music Festival stallholder will face court after police seized 36 illegal slingshots on Saturday.

Inspector Nicole Bruce of Ballina Police said a police sergeant walking through the stalls as they were setting up for the festival, noticed one stall had two varieties of the sling shots for sale.

"A stallholder from Queensland was displaying sling shots for sale, which is illegal in NSW," she said.

"Police confiscated the sling shots and the 42-year-old man will be issued with a future court attendance notice to face Ballina court."

Insp Bruce said the man was charged with possessing a prohibited weapon without a permit.

She said it was not unusual for police to seize illegal items from markets.

"Sling shots get picked up occasionally by police along with other illegal items."

Ballina Country Music Festival promoter Carol Stacey said she was unaware a stallholder had been charged for selling the sling shots.

"All the stalls that we had were well screened; they go through a pretty rigorous screening before they are accepted."

"If we would have had any idea that was going to happen, there is no way in the world that the stall holder would have got in the gate."

Ms Stacey said about 5000 people enjoyed the festival, which was held in River St on stages and licensed venues around Ballina.

"The festival has been amazing and the crowds have been fantastic, they are well and truly past all expectations."

Insp Bruce warned people against owning or trying to sell sling shots, or shanghais as they are also known. "Anyone found in possession of a sling shot will be fined and the sling shot will be confiscated and destroyed."
