Spurs close gap on Chelsea after victory

FOOTBALL: Tottenham has closed the gap on Chelsea to 10 points with 10 games remaining at the top of the English Premier League with a 2-1 home win over Southampton.

Manchester United moved to fifth - its highest position for six months - after a 3-1 win at relegation-threatened Middlesbrough.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool, meanwhile, lost ground on the leaders after they played out a 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium.

Spurs seemed to be comfortably on their way to a 10th successive home league win when Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli scored in the first half at White Hart Lane.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse, called into the England squad last week, did give fans some late worries but the home side held on to remain second.

Goals by Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard and Antonio Valencia moved United above Everton and Arsenal.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was a happy man despite his team dropping points.

James Milner's seventh penalty of the season gave Liverpool the lead before Sergio Aguero equalised for Guardiola's team.

"It is one of the happiest days of my career as a manager. I am so proud,” Guardiola told reporters.

His pride came less from the result than "the spirit, the way we played”.
