Splendour back in the Bay

A reprieve for the environment and fauna in the north of the Byron Shire – that’s the CONOS response to the decision last week by Splendour in the Grass organisers to hold this year’s event at Belongil Fields at Byron Bay.
Splendour organisers cited time constraints brought about by the Land and Environment Court challenge by CONOS to Byron Council’s decision to allow a trial event at their North Byron Shire Parklands site at Yelgun for the decision.
While a judgment is imminent, organisers said they were running out of time to prepare the Yelgun site ‘should a positive outcome be achieved’.
As a result, said North Byron Shire Parklands general manager, Mat Morris, organisers had ‘moved ahead’ with planning this year’s event.
“We hope to be able to host the festival as a trial event at North Byron Shire Parklands in 2010,” he said.
Bob Oehlman, president of CONOS – Conservation of North Ocean Shores – said the decision to go back to Belongil Fields wasn’t really surprising, given the time constraints.
“It’s a reprieve for this area – a reprieve for the fauna and environment,” he said.
“We are not against the event as such, just the area where it was planned to be held.
“It goes to show that Splendour can hold the event somewhere else without having to impact on sensitive land at Yelgun and without forcing the pandemonium of the event on the communities in the north.
“A lot of people don’t realise the impact it will have on the community.”
