Spare a thought for your family pets this New Year’s Eve

BRONTE the pup's run-in with a car should act as a warning to other pet owners to ensure they spare a thought for the family pets this New Year's Eve.

The six-year-old whippet escaped from her owner's yard at the first signs of a storm and was missing for a couple of days before she was found.

The loveable Wondunna dog had been hit by a car while on the loose.

Vets from Bayview Veterinary Surgery in Torquay have been tending to Bronte's leg and injuries but senior vet Dr Sheyne Horton said it was likely Bronte may have to adapt to life as a three-legged-dog in the New Year.

"It's really important to ensure your pet is confined if fireworks and storms cause them distress," Dr Horton said.

"I think we probably see more injured pets running away and getting injured after storms but you don't want to lose your pets on New Year's Eve."

He said he thought staffordshire terriers were the breed most likely to have noise phobias and separation anxiety.

"Keeping pets confined can often be a comfort and we have new Thunder Shirts to act like a hug to settle dogs when a storm is on the way."

The dog jackets slip on like a winter pet coat but Dr Horton said they were more effective than sedatives to manage dog anxiety.
