Some businesses reopened

MOST businesses affected by the fire that gutted La La Land nightclub have reopened, but the nightclub and dental surgery premises remain closed.

The fire, believed to have started in an air-conditioning unit, forced up to 70 people to be evacuated from the nightclub and nearby backpackers on January 4.

Lawson St and Lawson Lane were closed while the fire was extinguished.

Bay Centre Medical has reopened its surgery after a temporary clinic was established for five days at Byron Bay District Hospital. Entrance is by Lawson Lane.

Patients of Dr Hicks Dental are still being seen in an alternative surgery. Phone the usual number for bookings.

At the front of the arcade, Afends and Byron Bay Eyecare have reopened.

"We were able to start trading again last Wednesday," Bev Smith, optical dispenser, said.

Police are preparing a report.
