Snapper gamble: Nicole bets it all and loses on MasterChef

NICOLE Cleave bet it all and lost on MasterChef tonight.

The mum-of-four from Perth is the third home cook to be eliminated from the reality cooking show.

The 55-year-old chose to put all her eggs in one basket in tonight's elimination challenge, in which the contestants were asked to make up to three snapper dishes using just one fish over three 30-minute rounds.

Instead of saving some of her snapper in case she didn't produce one of the five best dishes, Cleave cooked an old favourite: whole Chinese style pan-fried snapper.

"I knew fully what the consequences would be if I stuffed it up and it was something I was prepared to take," she told APN.

"I said I was going to go out with a bang and as it transpired that's exactly what happened."

After her dish failed to impress the judges, Cleave was left with nothing to cook with in the next round and the challenge was cut short.

But she has no regrets.

"Coming to the MasterChef competition is the most character building thing I've ever done," she said.

"Nothing can compare to when you roll the dice and I would say to anybody stand up, give it a go; It's hard work but it's great fun."

Her one word of warning is that show's challenges are much harder than they look on TV.

"When I auditioned I thought it was about time I put my money where my mouth is. I was that typical sit on the couch and yell at the television screen type of person," she said.

"It's not so easy when you're actually in the kitchen

"When you're under pressure and the judges are talking to you at the same time it's like having a brain freeze almost."

Nicole has started her own food blog and a catering business with her husband Kim.

"My husband has cooking background," she said.

"He has a chef qualification he hasn't used for many years, so we plan to cater in-home dining for when people want to entertain and don't want to do the cooking themselves."

MasterChef airs Sundays to Wednesdays at 7.30pm on Ten.
