SYDNEY FC's 4-0 rout of struggling Adelaide on Monday night continued its unprecedented start to the A-League season and took its unbeaten streak to a record 12 games.

The victory also showed why it is the most ruthless side in the history of the competition.

Those four goals took Sydney's tally in front of goal to 29 for the season, and while Melbourne City did one better at this stage last season, no team can match the Sky Blues' goal difference.

Having only conceded five goals in 12 games, the next best is Gold Coast United in 2010-11, which let in seven goals. The big difference is, while Gold Coast was similarly stingy, it only scored 12 in 12 games, and although Melbourne City had scored 30 goals at this stage of the season, it also let in 20.

What Sydney FC is doing in both boxes is unprecedented. Its plus-24 goal difference is six better than the previous best set by the Melbourne Victory (plus-18 in 2006-07).

Yet despite such a phenomenal unbeaten start by Sydney, the Victory holds the record for the most points collected after 12 games. In the 2006-07 season, the Victory won 10 and drew once in their first 12 games, just edging Sydney's 30 points tally from this season.

Sky Blues coach Graham Arnold was understandably rapt with his side's progress.

"Tonight (against Adelaide) we showed how ruthless we are and how strong we are on the break,” Arnold said. "We kept the ball very well, we tore them apart.

"I think we intimidate teams when we go on the field and they see what we're doing.

"They know they can't outrun us, they know they can't out-fight us, they know they're not as fit as us.

"And then I've got four weapons always on the bench ready to come on.”

Sydney plays the Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium on Friday night.
