Skoda prepares to join the SUV party

SIMPLY clever. That's what Skoda says of its cars. Well, the simply cleverest thing the Czech brand should be doing right now is bringing an SUV to market at a time when the segment is booming.

And here it is. Ahead of its full in-the-metal reveal at the Geneva Motor Show next month, Skoda has released sketches of its VisionS concept, which will ultimately become its seven-seat SUV set for production in 2017.

It will be the largest Skoda in a new portfolio of SUVs the VW Group-owned brand is expected to roll out in coming years.

As Volkswagen's sub-brand, price for a seven-seat Skoda SUV would markedly undercut the equivalent Touareg (starting from $67,990) and would more likely be a rival to the new Hyundai Santa Fe ($38,490) and Kia Sorento ($40,990) seven-seaters.

Skoda said the VisionS is 4.7m long, 1.9m wide and nearly 1.7m high, making its dimensions very similar to the likes of the Kia Sorento and VW Touareg.

"Inside traditional brand values are recreated with a large interior, here featuring three rows of seats, offering a generous space for six occupants," the release stated.

But with three across the second row of seats, seven bodies in total could be accommodated in reasonable comfort if some of that number were kids.

Not much else has been revealed about the sharply be-creased big Czech, but expect petrol and diesel variants for Australia, and possibly a hybrid too, while sources said Skoda has registered the name "Kodiak" as an official trademark, so it would be no surprise to see the big SUV named as such.
