Shire teams rack up big winning scores

RUGBY LEAGUE
Byron Bay 46 v Marist Brothers 16
Mullumbimby 34 v Ballina 16

Both the Byron Bay Red Devils and the Mullumbimby Giants racked up big scores against their NRRRL opponents last weekend.

The Devils ran in eight tries in their 46-16 romp against Marist Brothers at Red Devil Park on Sunday, with back-rower Simon Kelly getting three of them.

It was a pleasing result for coach Nathan Cross, as was the form of halfback and playmaker, Jared De Thierry, returning from a serious leg injury.

At Mullumbimby, the Giants didn’t have it all their own way, holding only a slender 16-10 lead at half-time. But they went on with it in the second half, with the win putting them in second place on the competition table on 26 points, four behind leaders Lower Clarence.

The Red Devils are in fourth spot on 24 points but face a tough away match this weekend in the final round against Lower Clarence. Mullum are away to Cudgen.
