Search underway for man washed out to sea off Bondi

The Westpac Helicopter has been called to help search for a missing person.
The Westpac Helicopter has been called to help search for a missing person.

A search is also underway for a man who was swept off rocks at Bondi Beach in Sydney's east this afternoon.

Stephen Leahy from the Westpac Lifesaver helicopter said a call was made to triple-0 just after 2:30pm to report the man being washed into the sea, ABC reports.

"Witnesses have indicated a man was swept off the rocks just south of the Bondi icebergs," Mr Leahy said.

"He was in the water a very short period of time before he became submerged.

"He hasn't been seen since and an extensive search is now underway."

The news comes as Australia's most populous city readies itself for another tense night - particularly for residents on the Northern Beaches where massive swells and a big high tide washed property's backyards into the sea.

The swell is still in excess of 10 foot (three metres) and is expected to remain very large for the next few days.
