SCU to suffer under Gillard's university funding plan
COWPER MP Luke Mr Hartsuyker said Federal Labor's claims that per student funding at universities had increased under the Gillard Government are wrong.
Mr Hartsuyker said the the Gillard Government was being loose with the truth about the impact of its funding cuts on universities.
Southern Cross University's vice chancellor has raised a number of concerns with the local member about the Gillard Government's tertiary education cuts.
"The cuts will hit students in a number of ways," Mr Hartsuyker said.
"Universities will have to cut how much they invest in teaching, and students will also be saddled with a higher HECs bill after the transfer of the Student Start Up Scholarships onto their HECs debt.
"Universities and tertiary students are paying the price for the Gillard Government's waste and mismanagement."
The Gillard Government has announced funding cuts of $2.8 billion to universities.
Mr Hartsuyker said the figure is greater when a cut at the end of 2012 is taken into account.
"Once again this Government is fiddling the figures and playing with numbers to disguise funding cuts," he said.
"In this case they are not being up front about the true impact of these cuts on university funding for students.
"As a result of these cuts Southern Cross University will be out of pocket by millions of dollars which will have a direct impact on the university's capacity to deliver a quality education."
