Science Minister gone from frontbench but funding remains

DESPITE ditching a Science Minister from its frontbench, the Abbott Government has maintained more than $500 million in science and research funding, Education Minister Christopher Pyne announced on Friday.

The funding will got to more than 1000 research projects over the next two years, through universities, the CSIRO and other research bodies.

Mr Pyne said he hoped the funding would result in future "eureka moments and Nobel Laureates".

But the funding announcement, allocated under the previous government, comes after vocal criticism of the government for not continuing a Science Minister role on the front-bench.

It also follows reports the government was preparing to sack a quarter of all staff at the CSIRO, an issues expected to paly a key role in parliamentary sittings next week.
