School rugby union team victorious

Byron Bay High School’s under 14 rugby union side was victorious in the recent annual 10-a-side tournament for Far North Coast Schools at Woodlawn.

The boys played and defeated Evans River High School 29 - 5, then Alstonville 25 - 5 to win their pool convincingly.

They then had to play Xavier College who had disposed of the rugby giants Woodlawn and Trinity College in the final.

In a see-sawing game, Sequoya Rawson-Smith scored two tries and kicked two goals to star in the final and Davis Jensen and Matthew Burvill tackled everything that moved.

With 30 seconds left to play, a Xavier player was headed for the corner to score what would have been the match-winning try, when Jaiden Jones flew out of nowhere and crash-tackled him into touch.

Byron Bay took the game 14-12.
