School at centre of US shooting to be torn down

THE future of tighter gun restrictions in the United States may be unclear, but at the site of last year's school massacre, action could be at hand.

A task force put together after a gunman killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut late last year, wants the school torn down and replaced.

CNN reported the taskforce considered other options including renovating the existing building or developing a new school on a different site.

The group voted unanimously on Friday for the school to be demolished.

Currently, Sandy Hook students attend the Chalk Hill Middle School in a neighbouring town.
