Scarlett Johansson new band 'hit with legal complaint'

SCARLETT Johansson's new band The Singles may have released their first song just last week, but already another group with the same name has reportedly issued a legal complaint.

Los Angeles duo Vince Frederick and Nicky Veltman also go by the moniker and have sent a cease-and-desist letter alleging trademark infringement to the actress's representatives, Pitchfork reports.

"I woke up one morning and learned from the news that our band name was literally just taken by someone else as their own," frontman Frederick said in a statement.

"It's hard to believe that any musician would do something like that to another band. The Singles has been my life for the past 16 years. We have worked so incredibly hard to make it a success."

Frederick added that his band has a range of social media accounts, with their music available to download on iTunes and buy from record shops.

"Just a simple search on Google would have revealed that The Singles was already a band name being used," he said.

Johansson, who has formed a group with Este Haim from Haim, Kendra Morris, Julia Haltigan and Holly Miranda, is yet to respond publicly to the complaint but will presumably have to consider another name.

Dave Sitek's record label Federal Prism, who signed her band, has also not issued a comment, but founding partner Jeff Bowers reportedly told The Hollywood Reporter that he would like to "take the vinyl and T-shirts marked as 'The Singles' and sell them all and donate all of the money to the Los Angeles Children's Hospital".

"The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls," Johansson told Rolling Stone earlier this month. "I wanted it to be like [influences Grimes, The Go-Gos and The Bangles]: ultra-pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke."

The Under the Skin star released her debut album as a solo artist in 2008, featuring songs written by Tom Waits.
