Say thanks to achievers by nominating for awards

TIME is running out to nominate people for local 2014 Australia Day awards.

Nominations for people in the Kyogle council area wind up today and in the Richmond Valley council they close tomorrow.

Lismore, Ballina and Byron councils are a bit more forgiving in their deadlines. In Lismore, residents have another fortnight to nominate someone for an award. Ballina residents have until December 22 and Byron residents have until December 20.

Nomination forms

Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell said the awards recognised volunteers and high achievers.

"Lismore is full of people doing great things whether it's in sports, academia, with charitable causes, the arts or protecting and conserving our environment," she said. "The annual Australia Day Awards are a chance to say thank you to these people and recognise the contribution they are making to our society.

"It's important that people nominate those who deserve this recognition as often they are out there making a difference quietly and with little reward."

In Lismore, the award categories are: Citizen, Young Citizen, Aboriginal Citizen, Services in Community (group/individual), Sportsperson, Junior Sportsperson, Sports Team/Group, Art/Cultural and Sustainable Environment. However, different councils have different categories. Kyogle, for example, also has awards for contributing to the business community, contributing to the creative industries and to enhancing children/s participation in community life.

Check the nomination form for your local council to check its full list of categories.
