Saddle up for Byron Bay Cup

Ballina Racecourse will be the venue on Sunday for the running of the $20,000 Byron Bay Cup, marking the 122nd anniversary of the first running of the cup.

The cup day is becoming more and more popular each year and once again has attracted strong support from local businesses.

Buses will be leaving from the Byron Bay Services Club from about 11am on Sunday. Tickets are $15 and must be booked at the club by tomorrow afternoon.

The club is putting on a special breakfast for racegoers from 10am.

Ballina Jockey Club CEO Sarah Wills said the Byron Bay Cup race day was growing in stature and was one of the most important events on the Northern Rivers racing calendar.

Ms Wills said this year it was being promoted with the Ballina Cup as part of the Ballina Spring Racing Carnival.

“This is a day planned for excitement and fun for the Byron Bay community which we hope will be well supported,” she said.

Great support

Chairman Robert Pitt said the club was delighted that SPAR Supermarkets was once again be sponsoring the cup.

“We have also had great support from the Byron Bay business community, with all races being sponsored by local businesses,” he said.

“This is a great day, not only for racing, but for the Byron community to come together and celebrate Byron Bay itself.”

The jockey club is again hosting the 100 Club Supporters Trackside Marquee.

Tickets are available from the club’s ambassador to Byron Bay, Ross King, on 0412 361 786.

The Trackside Marquee tickets include bus transport to and from the races, gate entry and entry into the marquee where complimentary food and drinks will be available.
