Sad news for Aldi shoppers

IT'S the question many ALDI shoppers in Australia wanted an answer to.

When the popular supermarket chain announced in the UK that they were releasing an advent wine calendar in time for Christmas, Australians wanted in.

The controversial product also made the news on local websites and TV broadcasts.

The wine advent calendar features 24 mini bottles of wine that are to be consumed over 24 days.

Each bottle carries 200ml of wine, a little bit more than a medium-sized wine glass.

In Australia it would retail for around $85, which equates to about $3.50 per bottle.

UK ALDI shoppers will get a selection of red, white, rose and sparkling wines in the advent calendar which comes in a decorated pack.

Many posted Facebook messages to ALDI Australia's Facebook page calling on the local arm of the company to bring the product here.

One Australian Facebook user wrote: "I saw a video post about Aldi bringing out a wine advent calendar in the U.K. - wondering if we will be lucky enough to get it in Australia?"

Another echoed the sentiment, asking: "Is there some kind of petition we can sign to get the wine advent sold in Australia? Even better would be an Australian wine advent calendar using Australian wine."

Another thought Australia was getting the calendar, and asked: "When will the Aldi wine advent calendar be released? Thanks."

Another asked: "ALDI will you be doing this in Australia this year please???.

Please, ... say yes!"

So far, ALDI Australia have told shoppers on social media that they would let their team know there is demand for the calendar here.

In one message, the ALDI Australia social media team replied by saying: "We have stores in a number of different countries, and we offer different products in each depending on the demand locally. We will let the team know you would love to see the Wine Advent Calendar available in our stores for Christmas with Australian Wines. Thanks for posting."

But when News Corp Australia asked ALDI Australia whether the product has a chance of coming here in reality, the answer was no.

An ALDI Australia spokesman told News Corp Australia: "ALDI operates in a number of countries, in which varying products are sold in each market. At this stage, the wine advent calendar will not be available in Australian ALDI stores."

In a statement, the company offered its " extensive range" liquor on offer over the festive season, including ALDI's Monsigny Premier Cru Champagne.

"Monsigny Premier Cru Champagne will be available in all ALDI Australia stores that sell alcohol from October 4, 2017," the spokesman said.
