Bridge to Bridge takes best in the country to the edge

IN THE ski racing community, the Grafton Bridge to Bridge is widely recognised as the toughest race in NSW, if not the country.

The gruelling course is a true test of driver's skill, skiers legs and observer concentration.

As one driver who missed a gate at the end of the course, on Sunday said: "You've got a split second to make a lot of decisions, and this year I made the wrong one."

And as race organiser Mark Stephenson said, what makes Grafton both tough and different was the fact you don't just have to go the distance, you've got to deal with the wake from other boats as well.

"The Grafton Bridge to Bridge is probably the toughest race in Australia because of the wake from boats going both ways," Stephenson said.

And he would know, having completed the course more than 14 times.

This year he skied in the unlimited outboard class, taking a tow behind Cyclone Racing Two.

"We've got a great team of helpers and that allows me to get out and do it," he said. Another local, 17 year-old Brandon Disson of Grafton, managed a solid second in the 60 mile an hour class.

The number of boats in the race was a little down on last year, with a group of 91 starters.

Stephenson said higher insurance premiums had increased entry fees.
