Rugby union told to pay Connolly $13k interest

Former Australian Rugby Union coach John Connolly sued QRU.
Former Australian Rugby Union coach John Connolly sued QRU. DARREN ENGLAND

QUEENSLAND Rugby Union has been ordered to pay more money to former Wallabies coach John "Knuckles” Connolly.

On September 1, the Sunshine Coast councillor and former coach won $150,000 in damages following a legal tussle with the union.

The amount of interest and court costs the union had to pay was not decided on that day.

But in a judgment published on Friday, Brisbane District Court ordered the union to pay $13,489.25 interest.

QRU must also pay Mr Connolly's costs "of and incidental” to the case, to be assessed on an indemnity basis.

Indemnity costs usually include all reasonable fees, charges or other expenses a party to litigation has to pay.

The former coach launched the legal action after QRU axed him in 2015.

Mr Connolly, nicknamed Knuckles, was only six weeks into a $3000-a-week consultant role supposed to last until the 2016 Super Rugby season wrapped up.

He declined to comment on the judgment on Friday. QRU was approached for comment on Friday afternoon.

Mr Connolly previously said he was happy with the decision to award him $150,000 and felt "vindicated”.
