Royal welcome at RAAF Base for the Duke and Duchess

THE last time Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale shook hands with Prince William, it was under much more sombre circumstances.

The Duke of Cambridge's past visit to Ipswich was in 2011, when he arrived to console victims of the flood that devastated parts of the region.

This time, his stopover was on a much more celebratory note, following the recent birth of his son, George.

Joined by his wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, the couple flew into RAAF Base Amberley on Saturday as part of their royal tour of Australia.

Cr Pisasale was among the dignitaries to greet their highnesses on the tarmac and took the opportunity to thank Prince William for what he did in 2011.

"It was great to catch up with him and welcome him back to the city," Cr Pisasale said.

"We spoke about how the city was going and shared some of the memories from the last time he was here.

"He just loves being able to have a chat with people and Kate is no different, she was a delight to talk to."

The Duchess wore a white dress with blue poppies printed on it from British fashion house L.K. Bennett with blue suede heels and carried a handbag from Australian designer Oroton.

Nine-month-old Prince George was absent, staying behind in Sydney with his nanny.

The royal couple spent the morning meeting military families at the airbase.

As part of the visit they planted a eucalyptus tree at the base's memorial garden in remembrance of RAAF personnel who have died in service.

Following that, Prince William and Catherine spoke privately with four families of service personnel lost in recent conflicts.

After their visit to the base the Duke and Duchess headed to Brisbane to attend a reception in South Bank at 1.55pm and departed for Sydney shortly after 3pm.

The royal itinerary

Prince William's 10-day tour with his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, and their son, Prince George will see them visit Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Uluru and Adelaide.
