Rookie wins final tournament but Thomas earns bonus

ROOKIE Xander Schauffele won the final tournament but Justin Thomas the major prize after the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta.

American Schauffele, 23, hit a final-round -2under 68 to finish on -12under, a shot clear of countryman Thomas, with fellow American Russell Henley on -10 with Kevin Kisner and Englishman Paul Casey, who led going into the final round, on -9.

Thomas, who won five tournaments this season, closed with a 66 to claimed the PGA Tour's playoff title and the $12.5 million first place bonus that goes with it.

World No.1 Jordan Spieth made a run at the FedEx Cup title with a charge on the final day at East Lake but his three-under 67 left him in second place overall, 660 points back of Thomas in the standings.

The Tour Championship was the last of four events of the FedEx Cup playoffs and the finale to the PGA Tour campaign for the 11th consecutive season.

Five players, including Thomas, controlled their own playoff destiny if they could capture the Tour Championship this week.

Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Australian Marc Leishman and Jon Rahm also could have all won the FedEx Cup title with a Tour Championship victory.

Leishman finished the final tournament in a tie for 24th on +3over, while fellow Aussie Jason Day, who was in contention at the start of the final round, had a day to forgert witha +4over par 74 to finish 10 shots off the pace.
