Rock fishing dangerous this weekend

SURF Life Saving is advising rock fishermen and anglers to exercise extreme caution over the weekend with dangerous ocean conditions expected at NSW beaches from Saturday to Monday.

Dangerous surf conditions are expected with large waves affecting beaches, rock shelves, cliffs and headlands along the entire NSW coast.

The south easterly swell is expected to reach upwards of three metres on exposed south-facing beaches and rock platforms, with swell periods of 10 seconds. Beach wave height is expected to be between 1.8 metres and 2.4 metres.

On the North Coast, the swell was expected to peak on Sunday afternoon and remain until Monday afternoon. On the South Coast through to the Hunter, it would peak on Sunday morning, easing into Monday.

Surf Life Saving NSW urges all rock fishermen to avoid exposed rock platforms and ensure they are wearing life jackets.

“People need to take extreme care if planning on fishing from rocks, cliffs, headlands, break-walls and river-mouths in the coming few days” Surf Life Saving NSW Lifesaving Manager Dean Storey said.

Stan Konstantaras from the Recreational Fishing Alliance is warning people not to "put their lives on the line" and advises the following key safety messages for rock fisherman:

  • Avoid rock fishing on the open coast for the next few days
  • Always wear a lifejacket and proper footwear
  • Check tides, swell and weather conditions
  • Fish with a friend – never fish alone
  • Carry a mobile phone
  • Never turn your back to the sea
  • Always spend time watching the conditions before fishing, and constantly scan for changing conditions
  • If in doubt, don’t go out!

“Large waves can appear and wash over a rock-shelf without warning, sweeping any persons in the way into the sea – all rock fishermen should always wear lifejackets”, Mr Konstantaras said.
