Roar defender cops ban for spitting, more to come

FOOTBALL: Brisbane Roar defender Avram Papadopoulos will face the Independent Disciplinary and Ethics Committee after he was cited for spitting at a player by FFA's Match Review Panel.

Papadopoulos was sent off in the 76th minute of the Roar's loss to Sydney FC after he spat in the direction of Sydney FC forward Matt Simon.

In a statement, the FFA said the committee's hearing would determine what sanction should apply over and above the mandatory one-match suspension for a straight red card.

Papadopoulos will be suspended for this weekend's match against Western Sydney and appears likely to receive a lengthy additional suspension, as according to the A-League's disciplinary regulations, the minimum sanction for spitting on another player is six matches.

In 2008, Melbourne Victory's Brazilian Striker Ney Fabiano copped a nine-match ban, which was reduced to six on appeal, for spitting at Adelaide United's Robert Cornthwaite.

Simon, who was sent off for retaliating at Papadopoulos after the spitting incident, received the minimum one-match suspension for "serious unsporting conduct”.

Three other players also received suspensions after a weekend in which five straight red cards were shown.

Melbourne Victory's Mark Milligan received a one-match ban for "serious unsporting conduct” after attempting to headbutt Newcastle's Daniel Georgievski.

Osama Malik, who controversially received a straight red after making contact with Jacob Italiano when attempting to block a shot, was banned for one match and Adelaide's Ben Garuccio was also penalised for one match suspension after he was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Western Sydney's Roly Bonevacia on Sunday.
