Monks end visit with ritual destruction of a week's effort

FOUR Tibetan Monks from India's Yerpa House Sera Mey Monastery finished their tour of Lismore by dissolving the sand mandala they spent the past week creating.

The monks, who were on their second visit to Lismore, have travelled to Australia as part of a tour to raise money to help build a new temple at their monastery.

Yesterday, they concluded a week of creating a healing mandala at Lismore's The Yoga Space by brushing away the "millions of grains of coloured sand" they had used to create the work.

After the mandala was dissolved the monks joined a procession down Molesworth St to the river where they spread the sand in the water.

The Yoga Space owner Annie McGhee said the dissolution of the mandala was symbolic of the fragility of life and loss of attachment.

"The ritual dissolving of the mandala promotes physical, spiritual and emotional healing and by dispersing the grains of sand into the local river the monks will bless the area and all the plants and animals and the grains will spread around the world," Ms McGhee said.

One of the monks, Venerable Tenzin said he felt fulfilled after his time in Lismore.

"Lismore is a wonderful place and I have everything I need in my life here," he said.

"It's very peaceful here and everyone has lots of smiles."

The monks will continue to raise money to build their new monastery when they visit the Gold Coast, Byron Bay and Nimbin before flying back to India on Christmas day.

Those who missed out on seeing the monks in Mullumbimby or Lismore can find out more information at the Australian-Tibetan Buddhist Centre.
