Rooms available for Rally Australia

COFFS will become the centre of the rally sport universe come September but accommodation is still available in the city for the spring event.

Opal Cove Resort and Novotel Pacific Bay Resort have been fully booked for the running of Rally Australia.

Rally organisers have also booked a block of rooms at Wyndham Resort, the time share section of Novotel Pacific Bay Resort.

The two resorts, which are sponsors of the international motoring event, will be fully booked on September 8-11.

Boambee Bay Resort at Sawtell, which is also a time share resort, has 13 rooms available.

Boambee Bay Resort business development manager Kerry Stephenson said because some other rooms were still out to time share owners, they were likely to have more rooms become available.

The manager of the Coffs Harbour Visitor Information Centre, Brian Bowers, said while Aanuka and Aqualuna resorts were both holding bookings for the rally, the rest was ‘a little bit of a mixed bag' with some properties holding tentative reservations.

“We are now starting to get some individual inquiries through the centre,” Mr Bowers said.

“The bigger end of the competitors and teams has been out securing space and we have had small group inquiries from overseas, including Asia.

“People are looking to come down for various times, not necessarily the full 10 days.”

The general manager of Rally Australia, Michael Masi, said there would be between 1500 and 2000 event-related people in town, including officials and volunteers.

He said teams such as Citroen, which is looking to compete with five rally cars, would bring a crew of up to 90 people from France.

He said visitors would be looking for all kinds of accommodation, from camping sites all the way up to hotels and apartments.

Rally Australia is hunting for volunteers to help with the event.

Mr Masi said 300 people had registered in the past three weeks and because the skills required were so varied, everyone interested in motor sport, from professionals to blue collar workers, was welcome to register on the Rally Australia website.
