Peter Helliar to replace Dave Hughes on The Project

REPLACING his good mate Dave Hughes on The Project was an easy decision for Peter Helliar.

The funny man has been a regular guest on the show for more than a year and was honoured to be asked to join founding presenters Charlie Pickering and Carrie Bickmore on the current affairs show.

Helliar, who has known Dave "Hughesy" Hughes for close to 20 years, told The Guide he's grateful for the groundwork Hughes has done on the show.

"When I spoke to him I thanked him," he said.

"I said 'I won't forget the fact that you've launched the show and I'm just joining when it's a pretty smooth machine'.

"I've been involved in shows that launched like Rove and shows that haven't worked and the start's the hardest.

"The Project had a pretty tricky infancy... and now it has become this much-loved show. I'm really proud to be joining it."

Helliar officially joins the show full-time on January 13, with Anthony "Lehmo" Lehmann continuing on The Project's Friday panel. But it won't be the last viewers see of Hughes, with The Project regularly checking in with him during his upcoming stand-up tour.

It's going to be a busy year for Helliar, who will also be writing and producing a second series of his acclaimed ABC comedy It's A Date.

"It's going to be more of a balancing act with The Project," he said.

"I'm going to direct some more episodes of It's A Date... and Ten know that's going to happen and they're very supportive of that. I might not be able to be on set as long as I was last year but I trust everyone. Hopefully we're getting most of the same crew back from the first season."
