Regional universities oppose reduction of grant scheme

THE Regional Universities Network has told a Senate hearing into higher education reforms that it strongly opposes any reduction in Commonwealth Grant Scheme funding as outlined in the proposal.

In their submission to the Federal Employment and Education Committee, which held a public hearing on Tuesday in Brisbane, any reduction in funding would have a substantial negative impact on regional universities' teaching, research and community engagement activities.

The Regional Universities Network accepted the deregulation of student fees was the only feasible way the sector could maintain quality and remain internationally competitive.

However, it wanted particular circumstances facing regional and disadvantaged students and regional universities recognised in the new policy regime.
