REDLANDS City Council general manager of organisational services Nick Clarke and co-pilot Mike Levy are embarking on an epic journey for an epic cause.

The flying enthusiasts will fly to 42 regional Queensland centres over 17 days, to raise much-needed funds and awareness for Angel Flight, a charity that co-ordinates flights for financially and medically needy people to get the treatment they need.

As part of their journey Nick and Mike will touch down at the Toowoomba Airport today.

His flight from Caboolture Airport leaves at 9am.

Mr Clarke said he was encouraged to take to the skies for after hearing of the generosity of the pilots who donate their time to the cause and the heartbreaking stories of families separated by the tyranny of distance.

"What really inspired me to take on this project was understanding for the first time that very sick men, women and children living in remote communities have to deal with travelling long distances to major centres and when you're not feeling well, that's the last thing you want to do," he said.

"But what hit me emotionally was when I discovered that Angel Flight actually helps to keep families together - for instance if a daughter is ill, her mother can travel with her for treatment and often be back home the same day."
