Red Bull sets early pace but crash dominates session

A SPECTACULAR crash where Team BOC driver Andrew Jones plunged into a wall was one of the highlights yesterday during practice at the Gold Coast 600.

His car dislodged a tyre barrier, with rubber flying, and the front of the Holden Commodore was much worse for wear.

The team did not know the extent of the damage, but Jones was confident the car would be on the track today, with main series driver Jason Bright due out to qualify at 10.30am, local time.

The accident caused an extended red-flag period, with repair work needed on the tyre barrier.

"It was a mistake I made - I rode too much kerb," Jones said.

Red Bull Racing Australia's Jamie Whincup topped the first and fourth practice sessions, and teammate Paul Dumbrell won the second and third.

Today's program includes qualifying and top-10 shootout sessions before this afternoon's 102-lap race.
