Recruitment drive seeks train drivers

QUEENSLAND Rail has launched a recruitment drive for coal train drivers and expects to be flooded with applications.

The nation's biggest coal haulier says it wants to be ready to take advantage of “huge growth opportunities” in Central Queensland's expanding coalfields.

The jobs come with a salary in excess of $100,000 and are expected to attract interest from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales as well as the main coal train hubs in Rockhampton and Gladstone.

Marcus McAuliffe, QRNational's general manager, said he expected there would be interest from train enthusiasts and those looking for an interesting career in a growing company. There would be openings for experienced coal train drivers and novices.

But a love of trains would be part of the recruitment criteria, he said.

“A commitment to safety is the most important thing we are looking for,” he said.

“As the custodians of our trains, which are kilometres long and weigh many thousands of tonnes, it's essential that our drivers have the right attitude to safety.”

He said successful applicants would also need discipline, communication skills and the willingness to work as part of a team.

Last year the company hauled 186 million tonnes of coal and ran more than 28,000 services and is undergoing reform to take advantage of new customers and routes.

Train driver John Clayton said he encouraged prospective drivers to grab the opportunity.

“This is a chance that doesn't come along too often. I love my job, it's a great lifestyle, it's secure and it's a great group of people to work with.

“I'm sure there are people who wonder how they get a job like mine. Well this is their chance.”

Jobs are available at Pring, Jilalan, Coppabella, Callemondah and Bluff.

The company won't say how many jobs are up for grabs, but points to the fact that it is advertising across the country as an indication that it has a significant number of vacancies.
