Happy ending after Bangalow Showground rejects Men's Shed

THE saying that things usually turn out for the best definitely applies to a Bangalow Lions Club proposal to build a Men's Shed.

An application to build the shed on land near the stables at the showground had been approved by the Byron Shire Council but the resolution was rescinded following an objection from the Parks Trust.

The Catholic Church was then approached and it offered the use of a much larger parcel of land (1770sq m) to be leased at token rent for the construction of not only a Men's Shed but also badly needed public car parking for 26 vehicles.

The council has approved the new plan.

"It's just worked out so well for the club and for the community," Bangalow Lions Club president Tony Heeson said.

"Road construction company Baulderstone will help build the car park and the club will manage the Men's Shed after it is built by B and T Sheds of Goonellabah, an affiliate of Fair Dinkum Sheds, which is a sponsor of Men's Sheds across Australia."

The Bangalow Men's Shed will be 24m x 8m and include a meeting room and computer room as well as a workshop.

The original proposal was for a building of 8m x 7m.

"Men's Sheds make a difference," Mr Heeson said.

"They're a great service for many guys who are retired, have lost their job or their partner," he said.

The Bangalow Men's Shed could be up and running within six months.

"We hope to have the development application into the council before Christmas and have it completed early next year," Mr Heeson said.
